Home Button Not Working After Changing the Launcher

If the home button stops working after you change the launcher, the most likely cause is that the Automate flow stopped. Fire Toolbox uses an Automate flow to help the new launcher handle the home button. When that flow stops, the home button has nowhere to go. The tablet itself is usually fine. The fix is to get the flow running again, or to restore the navigation bar in Toolbox.

Fire Toolbox, by Datastream33, is shared through an XDA thread. The current Windows version is V45.1. You can get it from the download page. The home page gives a short overview. For background on the change itself, read how to change the Fire tablet launcher.

Why the Home Button Stops

A Fire tablet normally uses Fire Launcher as home. When you switch to a new launcher, Toolbox sets up a flow that intercepts the home press and sends it to the new launcher. That flow runs in Automate.

If Automate is closed, stopped, or put to sleep, the flow stops too. Then a home press does nothing, or it drops you back to a blank state. The new launcher may still be installed. It just does not get the home press anymore.

Other causes exist, such as a half-finished launcher change. But a stopped Automate flow is the first thing to check. It is quick to test and quick to fix.

First Check: Is Automate Still Running?

Pick up the tablet. Open Automate. Check if it is running and if the flow is present.

Try these steps:

  1. Open Automate from the app list. If you cannot find it, use the recent apps view or search in the app list.
  2. Look for the Launcher Invoker flow. Is it there? Is it running?
  3. If Automate was closed, reopen it.
  4. Press the home button again and see if it now works.

If the home button still does nothing, relaunch the flow from Toolbox. Connect the tablet to the PC, open Toolbox, and run the launcher step again. Stay on the tablet screen while the flow runs. Do not lock the tablet until the flow ends.

For a full walkthrough of that waiting step, see Fire Toolbox stuck on Automate setup.

Relaunch the Flow From Toolbox

Relaunching is often the cleanest fix. It sends a fresh flow to the tablet and gives the home button a working path again.

Steps:

  1. Connect the tablet to the PC with a data cable.
  2. Unlock the tablet and accept any ADB prompt.
  3. Open Toolbox on the PC.
  4. Go to the launcher section and run the Launcher Invoker flow again.
  5. On the tablet, finish every screen in the flow.
  6. Test the home button.

Do not skip screens on the tablet. A half-finished flow can leave the home button in the same broken state. Finish the flow, then test.

If Toolbox reports a problem while trying to disable Fire Launcher, that is a separate error. See “A problem occurred attempting to disable Fire Launcher” for that case.

Restore the Navigation Bar in Toolbox

If relaunching the flow does not help, restore the navigation bar in Toolbox. This step resets the navigation setup to a known state. It can clear a bad state left by a half-finished change.

In Toolbox, look for the navigation bar or launcher restore options. Use the restore option, then test the home button again. If the new launcher still does not take the home press, run the launcher step once more after the restore.

Restoring does not mean you lose the new launcher. The launcher app stays installed. You are only fixing how home presses are handled. You can set the launcher again after the restore if needed.

Use the Back Button and App List While You Fix It

While the home button is broken, you can still move around the tablet. Use the back button to leave an app. Use the recent apps view to switch apps. Use the app list to open Automate or Settings.

This matters because you need to open Automate to fix the flow. If you cannot reach the home screen, open Automate from the recent apps view or from the app list. If the app list itself is hard to reach, use the back button to exit the current app, then try again.

Do not factory reset at this stage. A factory reset is a last fallback for much worse problems. A stopped flow and a navigation restore cover most home button cases. Save the reset for when the tablet will not boot or the launcher crashes on every launch.

Check Restricted Firmware

On newer firmware, launcher changes are limited. See the explainer on restricted firmware on Fire tablets. Gen 13 from 8.3.1.9 and later, and Gen 12 to Gen 8 from 7.3.2.2 and later, are restricted. On restricted firmware, some launcher steps may not work as they did on older firmware.

If your tablet is on restricted firmware, a launcher change may behave differently. Do not expect a workaround that the author has not stated. Check your Fire OS version in Settings, then compare it with the restricted ranges. That check saves time and sets the right expectation.

A Safe Order to Try

Try fixes in this order:

  1. Open Automate. Check the flow is running.
  2. Relaunch the Launcher Invoker flow from Toolbox. Finish it on the tablet.
  3. Restore the navigation bar in Toolbox. Test again.
  4. Check your Fire OS version against the restricted firmware ranges.
  5. Only if the tablet is unusable, consider a factory reset as a last step.

This order starts with the simplest fix and moves to stronger steps only if needed.

FAQ

Why did the home button work yesterday and not today?

The Automate flow may have stopped since then. Automate can be closed or put to sleep. Reopen it and relaunch the flow.

Will restoring the navigation bar delete my new launcher?

No. The launcher app stays installed. Restoring fixes how home presses are handled. You can set the launcher again after.

What if Automate is missing from the tablet?

Run the launcher step again from Toolbox so the flow can be sent again. Do not try to fix the home button by changing other settings first.

Should I factory reset right away?

No. Try the flow relaunch and the navigation restore first. Factory reset is a last fallback when the tablet is unusable.
