Fire Toolbox Stuck on “Waiting for User to Finish Automate Setup”
If Fire Toolbox is stuck on “Waiting for User to Finish Automate Setup,” the step that is waiting is on the tablet, not on the PC. Toolbox sends a flow to the tablet through Automate. You must finish that flow on the tablet screen. Until you do, Toolbox will keep waiting. This is normal behaviour when the tablet step is left open. It does not mean Toolbox has crashed.
Fire Toolbox, by Datastream33, is shared through an XDA thread. The current Windows version is V45.1. You can get it from the download page. The home page gives a short overview. If you are changing the launcher, also read how to change the Fire tablet launcher.
What the Message Means
Automate is an app that runs small flows on the tablet. Fire Toolbox uses Automate for some steps, such as the Launcher Invoker flow. That flow helps a new launcher take over the home button.
When you start that step in Toolbox, Toolbox waits for a signal back from the tablet. The signal only comes when the flow finishes on the tablet. If you switch away, lock the tablet, or close Automate, the signal never arrives. Toolbox stays on the waiting message.
This is a good place to pause. Do not force-close Toolbox at once. Look at the tablet first. The answer is usually on its screen.
Finish the Flow on the Tablet
Pick up the tablet. Wake it and unlock it. Look for the Automate screen or a prompt that asks you to finish a step.
Common things to check on the tablet:
- Is Automate open? If not, open it.
- Is there a flow waiting for a tap? Read the prompt on screen and tap through it.
- Did a permission prompt appear? Allow what the flow asks for, so it can finish.
- Did the tablet lock? Unlock it and return to Automate.
Work through each screen until the flow ends. Do not skip a screen. A skipped screen can leave the flow half done. When the flow ends, Toolbox on the PC should move on within a short time.
If the tablet screen is blank, wake it and check Automate again. A flow can sit in the background while the screen sleeps. Bring it to the front and finish it.
Relaunch the Launcher Invoker Flow
If the flow seems stuck, or you closed it by mistake, relaunch it. In Toolbox, go back to the launcher step and start the Launcher Invoker flow again. Watch the tablet this time. Do not switch to another app until the flow ends.
Steps that help:
- On the PC, stop the waiting step if Toolbox lets you go back.
- On the tablet, open Automate and check that it is running.
- Start the flow again from Toolbox.
- Stay on the tablet screen until the flow ends.
If the flow ends but Toolbox still waits, close Toolbox and open it again. Then start the launcher step once more. A clean restart often clears a stale wait state.
If you changed the launcher and now the home button does not work, that is a linked problem. See home button not working after changing the launcher.
Check That Automate Is Running
Automate must be running for the flow to finish. If the app was stopped, closed, or put to sleep, the flow cannot send its signal back.
Check these points:
- Open Automate on the tablet. Does it open normally?
- Is the flow listed? If the flow is missing, start the step in Toolbox again so it can be sent again.
- Is the tablet low on battery or in a power-saving mode? Plug it in and keep the screen on while the flow runs.
- Did you clear Automate from recent apps? Reopen it and try again.
Do not uninstall Automate in the middle of this step. Toolbox needs it for this flow. If you remove it, the launcher step cannot finish in this way. Reinstall or restore it through Toolbox if needed, then try again.
If the Tablet Was Not Detected in the First Place
Sometimes the waiting message hides an earlier problem. If Toolbox never saw the tablet well, the flow may never have reached the tablet. Check the cable and ADB first. See Fire Toolbox not detecting your tablet for the cable-first checklist.
Signs of this deeper problem include: no prompt ever appeared on the tablet, Automate shows no flow at all, and Toolbox waits even after a restart. In that case, fix detection first, then run the launcher step again.
A Simple Order to Follow
Use this order each time you hit the waiting message:
- Look at the tablet. Wake it and unlock it.
- Open Automate. Finish any open flow screen.
- If no flow is open, relaunch the Launcher Invoker flow from Toolbox.
- Stay with the tablet until the flow ends.
- If Toolbox still waits, restart Toolbox and try once more.
This order saves time. It stops you from reinstalling Toolbox or changing settings that are not the cause. The flow must finish on the tablet. That is the core point.
FAQ
Does the waiting message mean Toolbox is broken?
No. It usually means the Automate flow on the tablet is not finished yet. Finish the flow on the tablet screen and Toolbox should move on.
What if I closed Automate by mistake?
Reopen Automate and relaunch the Launcher Invoker flow from Toolbox. Stay on the tablet until the flow ends.
How long should I wait?
Finish the tablet screens first. If the flow has ended and Toolbox still waits after a short pause, restart Toolbox and try the step again.
Can I skip Automate and still change the launcher?
No, not for steps that rely on the Launcher Invoker flow. That flow runs through Automate. Finish it, or use the restore options in Toolbox if you want to go back.
